Can business clients check or change details at their convenience?
Business clients can check or request changes to any of the following Australian business number (ABN) details at www.abr.gov.au using an Administrator AUSkey or an ATO primary digital certificate:
- trading names
- principal place of business address
- postal address for service of notices
- email address
- authorised contact
- associates – position held field only
- entity type (only changes within the same entity structure, for example, private company to public company).
Changes of details requested via the internet will be updated once all details have been submitted and confirmed.
There are certain details that cannot be automatically updated online on the ABR including:
- the legal name of a company, which must be updated by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC)
- the legal name of an individual, which must be changed by supplying evidence directly to a government body, such as the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), that can then supply this information to the Australian Business Register (ABR).
Legislation requires that the Registrar must be notified within 28 days when a change to the ABN details occurs. Refer to subsection 14(1) A New Tax System (Australian Business Number) Act 1999 (ABN Act).
