Who can apply to have their ABN details suppressed?

Entities can claim ‘special circumstances’ to apply to have their Australian Business Number (ABN) details suppressed. For example:

  • an individual who feels that, if their details appear on the public register, this may cause them or their family harm. For example, where domestic abuse and violence orders are in place, and
  • an individual who is employed in certain fields where the publication of their details may endanger them. For example, psychiatric doctors dealing with dangerous patients.

A written request for suppression of ABN details must be accompanied by a statutory declaration, giving the reasons for requesting ABN suppression, and also supporting documentation.

Examples of supporting information are:

  • a copy of a police report
  • a court order
  • a copy of a phone bill showing the entity has a silent number, and
  • a copy of an electoral roll letter showing the entity is a silent voter.
