ABR partners

What is an ABR partner?

An ABR partner is a government agency that has either entered into an agreement with the Registrar of the Australian Business Register to:

• access ABN details from the ABR (in accordance with the law)
• adopt AUSkey as the online security key that businesses can use to transact with them online, or
• make an online registration transaction available to businesses via the ABR.

Access to ABR data

ABN legislation allows the Registrar to disclose ABR information to eligible federal, state, territory and local government agencies that have a legal right to the information as specified by the A New Tax System (Australian Business Number) Act 1999.

The goal is to:

• make it easier for businesses to conduct their dealings with government, and
• reduce the number of government registration and reporting requirements for business.

ABR partners can use ABR information to:

• simplify their interactions with their clients
• identify and verify businesses that have an ABN
• check important information such as the GST status of a business
• identify businesses for registration, research and analysis purposes (using industry coding)
• confirm if the name, address and associate details of business clients are correct.

There are two types of information access available to ABR partners.

The partners listed under Public access are those that have access to information which is publicly available for viewing and searching via ABN Lookup. A list of publicly available data items can be found at What information can be accessed on the ABR.

The partners listed under Non-public access also have access to information which is confidential. The data items accessible by eligible government agencies can be found at What information can be accessed on the ABR.

AUSkey

AUSkey is a single key for:

• login to business-to-government online services
• lodging reports directly to government through business, financial or payroll software, refer to www.sbr.gov.au

In the future businesses may no longer need different user IDs and passwords as AUSkey becomes accepted by more government agencies for their online services.

Registration transactions hosted on the ABR

The ABR provides a platform through which certain government agencies can make their online registration transactions available to persons eligible for an ABN.

In addition to the ABR's own ABN and AUSkey registrations the ABR also hosts:

• a range of taxation transactions, including GST registration, on behalf of the Australian Taxation Office
• a business name registration transaction on behalf of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (from April 2011).
